Basic Stitches: Denim Shopping

A dressing room full of denim can seem like a daunting task. I could spend all day talking about denim brands, cuts, shopping tips, etc, but I'll stick to the abridged version today and give you Natalie's Top Tips for Denim Shopping:

  • If you don't have a pair of uniform-wash dark indigo jeans, that should be at the top of your shopping list. A dark wash is the most versatile and flattering.
  • If you are going for distressed, be careful to check the placement of fades and tears, which will only draw the eye to those embellished areas. (Example: Whiskering at the hips will make that area look larger.)
  • Do the "sit test." Sit down in your jeans and make sure there is not gapping in the back and ensure they don't fall too low on your seat. (Insert schoolyard flashbacks of "I see London; I see France . . . ") Most people are best opting for a mid- or high-rise jean. (A few of my current go-tos for women are J.Brand Maria High Rise or Levi's Mile High Skinny, and for men Levi's 511 Slim Fit or RRL Rigid Jean
  • Tight is right in the fitting room. The BIGGEST mistake I see clients make is buying their jeans too large. Ninety percent of denim will stretch a full size after just a day or two of wear. Trust me on this one!
